Horace’s Duskywing is a butterfly that is found all through the United States.

What Does the Horace’s Duskywing Look Like?

The Horace’s Duskywing is brown and the upper part of the male is dark brown and has no white.  The female Horace’s Duskywing is light brown and has large transparent spots.

The bottom of the Horace’s Duskywing has two spots and the male has yellow patches of scent that is on its abdominal.

The Horace’s Duskywing is around 49 millimeters in length.

The Horace’s Duskywing lives all throughout North America including Texas, Florida, the Gulf coast, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, South Dakota and even Connecticut.

The habitat of the Horace’s Duskywing is that they like to live where there are clearings, wooded areas, wooded swamps and in open fields and by roads.

When is the Horace’s Duskywing Most Active?

The Horace’s Duskywing is most active from April to September in the north and from January to November in the South.

The caterpillar of the Horace’s Duskywing eats red and white oak leaves, willow oak leaves, northern red oak, post oak, live oak and water oak.

The adult Horace’s Duskywing drinks nectar from flowers that are almost 5-foot-tall such as the dogbane, boneset, winter cress, sneeze weed, peppermint and goldenrod.

Finding a Mate

The Horace’s Duskywing male will look for a female by perching on twigs or on slopes or hills.

When the female lays eggs, she will lay one egg at a time.  The caterpillars will hatch and will eat the plant from where they are born and will rest in nests made from leaves.
